Silver earrings nautilus shell
Be enchanted by the wonders of the sea as well as mathematics with these earrings in the shape of a nautilus shell - a natural phenomenon that intrigues biologists and mathematicians alike. The spiral shape of the shell is not only aesthetically stunning, but also an example of logarithmic growth in nature.
Each nautilus shell consists of a series of carefully constructed chambers (septs) separated by walls within the shell. These chambers form a logarithmic spiral, with the radius of each winding increasing by a constant factor - a growth pattern close to the famous golden ratio (ϕ ≈ 1.618), although in reality the growth ratio is often slightly lower (between 1.33 and 1.5).
The nautilus builds an average of about 30 to 38 chambers during its lifetime , each time it grows out of its old chamber and adds a new one. This mathematically elegant construction has given the shell iconic status in both art and natural science.
Nina Designs is a jewelry brand with a heart of gold that makes fair trade jewelry in Thailand and Bali and tries to be as ethical and ecological as possible. Their wages are well above the national minimum wage, employees receive a thirteenth month, 3 months paid maternity leave, education on pre- and post-natal care, retirement savings, etc. In their studio in Bali, 50% of the managers are women, which is even more impressive there than here.
Nina Designs uses as much recycled silver as possible in its production in Bali and only recycled silver in its production in Thailand. A tree is planted per package shipped, which is part of a so-called "forest garden." The jeweler gives microloans to start-up craftswomen and supports various NGOs fighting for human rights, literacy or the environment. And, of course, their silversmiths make beautiful jewellery!
