Some species can easily live underground for a decade or more and then emerge en masse all together, making for a huge spectacle! And like many other animals, cicadas make sounds to find a mate. Thanks to their hollow abdomen that acts as a sound box, they can be tremendously loud: some species reach up to 120 decibels, comparable to a fire department siren or a solid rock concert.
